Deer Tick Portland reviews
Bret Michaels stole the show
I have always been a huge 38 Special fan. I saw them years ago before the 1st crash that took Ronnie and Steve. I also enjoy Lynyrd Skynyrd. I had never seen Poison or Bret Michaels but his story is phenomenal considering how sick he was recently.
If it was a different person mixing the sound for Skynyrd, they didn't do as good a job as they could have. Each band got progressively louder in volume, but you should never sacrifice clarity for volume. In addition, they could have pulled back the volume a little, especially when Skynyrd's new keyboard player had his time to shine. I don't know who was mixing the sound for Skynyrd, but it was not as crisp and clear as the sound for Bret Michaels and 38 Special.
Both Skynyrd and Bret Michaels had much more energy than 38 Special (Skynyrd's guitarists and their new keyboard player had plenty) but Van Zant just kind of walked around all night. From my standpoint, 38 Special stole the show. They rocked the house. Loved their sound and energy! They were all over the stage. You would never know they had been sick and you could tell they were appreciating every moment. They said they would be back next year, as it will be the 25th anniversary of them making music.
